Species text
This snail killing fly is recorded widely in England as far north as Yorkshire. It is widespread but very local with about 20 known post 1960 sites. A wide range of wetlands are used including open marshes and deeply shaded forest pools, margins of lakes and dune slacks. Permanent or temporary water bodies both appear to be used; there are indications that pools and ditches which dry out in summer and have sparse emergent Phragmites may be preferred. The larvae develop as parasitoids in a range of aquatic snails and terrestrial species. Management should ensure a range of vegetation types including temporary ponds, ditches and their marginal vegetation using rotational management where necessary. Seasonally fluctuating water levels may be of importance (Falk, 1991). References
